Competition between glass transition and liquid–gas separation in attracting colloids

چکیده
We present simulation results addressing the phenomenon of colloidal gelation induced by attractive interactions. The liquid–gas transition is prevented by the glass arrest at high enough attraction strength, resulting in a colloidal gel. The dynamics of the system is controlled by the glass, with little effect of the liquid– gas transition. When the system separates into liquid and vapour phases, even if the denser phase enters the non-ergodic region, the vapour phase enables the structural relaxation of the system as a whole. Disappearance of the gas-liquid phase transition for highly charged colloids.
We calculate the full phase diagram of spherical charged colloidal particles using Monte Carlo free energy calculations. The system is described using the primitive model, consisting of explicit hard-sphere colloids and point counterions in a uniform dielectric continuum. We show that the gas-liquid critical point becomes metastable with respect to a gas-solid phase separation at colloid charge...
متن کاملLiquid limits: glass transition and liquid-gas spinodal boundaries of metastable liquids.
The liquid-gas spinodal and the glass transition define ultimate boundaries beyond which substances cannot exist as (stable or metastable) liquids. The relation between these limits is analyzed via computer simulations of a model liquid. The results obtained indicate that the liquid-gas spinodal and the glass transition lines intersect at a finite temperature, implying a glass-gas mechanical in...

We study the phase behavior and the interfacial tension of the screened Coulomb (Yukawa) restricted primitive model (YRPM) of oppositely charged hard spheres with diameter sigma using Monte Carlo simulations. We determine the gas-liquid and gas-solid phase transitions using free energy calculations and grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations for varying inverse Debye screening length kappa. We ...
متن کاملThe physics of the colloidal glass transition.
As one increases the concentration of a colloidal suspension, the system exhibits a dramatic increase in viscosity. Beyond a certain concentration, the system is said to be a colloidal glass; structurally, the system resembles a liquid, yet motions within the suspension are slow enough that it can be considered essentially frozen. For several decades, colloids have served as a valuable model sy...
متن کاملSelective Depletion Interactions in Mixtures of Rough and Smooth Silica Spheres.
The depletion interaction as induced between colloids by the addition of a polymer depletant is one of the few ways in which short-ranged attractions between particles can be controlled. Due to these tunable interactions, colloid-polymer mixtures have contributed to a better understanding of the role of attractions both in equilibrium phenomena such as phase transitions and liquid surfaces as w...
